EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE

Muybridge was a 19th century British photographer who spent much of his working life in California, and traveling in other parts of the United States. He is known for his pioneering work in using photographic sequence to document motion. Muybridge famously set out to prove the answer to what was a hot topic of debate at the time: whether all four legs of a horse left the ground simultaneously during its gallop. Muybridge used multiple cameras to take some of the first motion-capturing sequences and went on to invent devices such as his zoopraxiscope, which was used to project some of the first motion pictures. He also led a rather interesting life aside from his inventions and studies on motion. He was apparently acquitted of murdering his wife's lover and offered as a defense, the head injury he sustained in a stagecoach accident some years before. The jury eventually found the murder was "justified" and found him not guilty.

Read more about him here and check out the fantastic show the Tate had on him last year, by looking through their exhibition guide
